Both of the Google Hangouts that we had this week were incredibly interesting. This was the first time that I had really heard about the non-profit organization that would be speaking, so I was incredibly excited for them, especially Doctors Without Borders. The work they do I really admire, especially with their current work fighting against Ebola, and they have a very impressive social media focus as well. On Twitter they have 432k followers! That’s a follower count that even some celebrities couldn’t boast. Anyway, I digress, as this week’s hangout focused on strategic campaigns with a visual focus.
They have so many social media accounts that their social icons won’t fit entirely on the bottom part of the page at the browser width I looked at it with so I had to go to a separate page to find some of their profiles, because they even had a separate page for that which was incredible and something other non-profits often don’t consider when setting up their websites. One thing I did notice is that their Instagram account isn’t linked from that page, so that should be something to update.
Despite this, they have an AMAZING Instagram presence. It is truly one of the best I’ve seen, non-profit or not. In only 370 posts, they have garnered over 42,000 followers. This is extremely impressive. Each post they make is very high quality and looks like they could have been taken by a professional photographer, which really adds to the visual impact of their accounts. The photos grip you instantly and make you interested in the captions included, which is where they really succeed strategically. The photos and captions combine to form a truly powerful story about an issue of importance, be it someone’s story, information about the field, or even a story about a place, to include just a few. They effortlessly interweave hash tagged text to make it so that it is searchable without appearing unnatural. Every one of the photos told me a new story, and with each story I felt closer to Doctors Without Borders’ cause. Just scrolling through their account allows the viewer to get a great overview about what the organization is about, and the positive impact they’ve had on their cause. Nick Owen is a fantastic editorial and social media coordinator who really knows exactly what he is doing when it comes to sharing on social media for an impact.
