Charity Water seemed to have a really interesting social media strategy. During the Google hangout today, Paull Young mentioned that the organization doesn’t advertise on Facebook. It would seem that Facebook is actually the better social media platform for any organization because it could give you the bigger picture of what companies are trying to accomplish. Young mentioned that so many other organizations use Facebook as their major form of social media advertising and that perhaps the charity Water Facebook would receive less traffic because of this. Also he mentioned that Facebook doesn’t give support to non-profit orgs like other media outlets.
While the organization has an Instagram that has content for viewing, it seems that Charity doesn’t really focus on utilizing social media as a big contender for how the public participates for the organization. One point Young made is that they implement a “word of mouth” movement in which is unique to me. The organization prompts people to give up gifts for one birthday and ask for donations for Charity Water instead. This is really interesting because for the most part people are guaranteed to receive money as gifts in or gifts with great monetary value for birthdays, so it’s not something anyone has to go out of their way to do. It’s convenient and it’s like killing two birds with one stone. On one hand you get to donate to a good cause and on the other you’re participating in selflessness in giving to the birthday person and to others who are in greater need. I like Charity Water is more focused on building a movement than just donations.
