The nonprofit health organization that I chose to research is My Angel With Paws. My Angel With Paws provides service dogs for people whom primarily have disabilities with mobility (“Service Dogs at My Angel With Paws”). The not-for-profit organization’s mission is to help the public understand and better public knowledge of the needs of people with physical disabilities via service and therapy dogs (“Service Dogs at My Angel With Paws”). Just as many for profit and not-for-profit organizations have done, My Angel With Paws has had to update and enter the social media world.
From my digging I found that the organization has few social media sites dedicated to spreading its notoriety. There are only Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts for My Angel With Paws, and this lack of use and an insignificant existence, there are no articles about My Angel With Paws’ social media engagement. However, the Facebook page is the most used and highest followed. It has 1324 followers. It is updated frequently; about every two to four days it has a new post. My Angel With Paws’ Facebook strategy is pretty simple, use pictures of dogs and those helped by service/therapy dogs. I can’t argue with that kind of strategy. Everyone loves dogs, and if you don’t then you don’t have a heart. That was sarcasm, but honestly dogs are awesome. I digress. Even though the social media use does not reflect its success, My Angel With Paws was deemed a top rated non-profit in 2013 by greatnonprofits.org (“My Angel With Paws, Inc. Overview”). The organization may not be socially advanced like other non-profit organizations like Preemptive Love Coalition, but it is still successful.
Preemptive Love Coalition uses its social media to endorse its name frequently by putting up links to its website or sharing links from other places that support them in some way. To compare the two the best way is to look at their Facebook pages. As much as they share links, Preemptive Love incorporates pictures with almost every post because the visual helps solidify what the link or text is saying. Also a thing that is different than My Angel With Paws and Preemptive Love is the frequency of posting. My Angel puts a new post every few days. Preemptive Love sometimes has two or three posts a day. Because Preemptive Love is getting its face across Facebook timelines then it is being seen more often and gains a bigger following, which is evident in their almost 13,000 followers. In an interview with The Digital Naturalist, Preemptive Love co-founder Cody Fisher revealed a problem with their videos. He said that if they are missing their key audiences who would connect with their videos then they are not doing their videos justice (Walsh). One problem Jeremy Courtney of Preemptive Love said that was a problem of their social media was “#WeAreN.” #WeAreN is a hashtag created by Preemptive Love, and Courtney said that most of their efforts were unsuccessful because the Islamic state gave Mosul’s Christians the options to convert, pay a submission tax, or “face the sword” (“Behind #WeAreN: ‘If One Group Is Marked, We’re All Marked’”). Even highly successful organizations deal with social media problems, but My Angel With Paws does not have these problems because social media is not a big steeple of their organization.
