Susan G. Komen is an organization that I feel very strongly about. I have many relatives who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are battling this terrible disease. Susan G. Komen is a non-profit organization that has mainly one goal: to raise awareness for breast cancer. In order to do this, Susan G. Komen has held many successful fundraisers and has taken the most successful ones and perfected them into an annual fundraising strategy.
A few of the most successful ones are titled “3-Day” and “Passionately Pink”. From reading their website, the 3-Day seems to be a celebratory walk. The walk starts on a Friday, and all of the participants walk a total of 60 miles through the course of the weekend (about 20 miles each day). Most of these walkers wear pink (the international color for breast cancer) and sing, dance, laugh, and tell encouraging stories to one another over three days. The fundraising strategy for this walk is that each walker has to raise $2,300 dollars in order to participate, making this the only breast cancer event to ask for that much money. It seems to be a lot of money to walk, but Susan G. Komen is there every step of the way to help you. Once you register for this event, you are directed to a website where you can set up your own account and they provide you with all the tools and tips you could want to help ensure you raise $2,300. Passionately Pink is a fundraiser that you yourself can create. Whether you decide to do a bake sale or just wear pink at the office on a Friday, participates are expected to donate just a few dollars. All of these donations are of course voluntary, and the Susan G. Komen organization just hopes that everyone will join in the process of raising awareness and fighting for a cure of this terrible disease. Susan G. Komen seems to be quite successful in their fundraising events and have raised $2.2 billion since starting in 1982.
In our Google Hangout video this week, we learned that these fundraising strategies should be posted on multiple platforms. Susan G. Komen does a great job of displaying these strategies through their Facebook page, Twitter page, and website. On Twitter, there are numerous hashtags to draw attention to this organization such as #fightforthecure #raceforthecure and #pinkout. October is especially active for this organization as it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To raise awareness to this, their Facebook page is filled with all things pink and many Facebook users have changed their profile pictures to the pink ribbon with links to the donation site for this organization. Without these social media platforms, I doubt Susan G. Komen would be as successful as it is today.
