I wanted to do my discussion on an organization that I have heard of growing up in my teenage years. I wanted to stick closer to researching organizations that had to do with mental health. This is a highly important and global health concern as well. I researched the nonprofit organization, To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA). Their mission is to help people that struggle with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury by encouraging them, inspiring them, and even getting them to free direct treatment/recovery if need be.
They are such a successful organization when it comes to their numerous strategies for fundraising. A couple strategies that stood out to me were their events page collaboration on Facebook. This is where supporters can collaborate with the organization and create a fundraising event, if approved, on their own in their community. They can have an open mic night, a fashion show, or even a car wash. The money that the supporters raise goes to the organization (they are also provided with the supplies they might need for their event i.e. flyers, merchandise, and public speakers). This is usually a success since there are so many going on in different places around the U.S. at different times and the organization helps promote them. They also have the direct link on their website where you can sign up for a monthly donation or a one-time give. They also have the UChapters where groups of university students, at their school, host their own support groups in support of the organization. They raise money as well throughout their semesters. TWLOHA also has their own “street team” where the supporters for the organization are promoting them on a regular basis online through different social media platforms.
These I listed, I feel were some of their best practices. As Gloria mentioned during her discussion about connecting with the audience, that is what this nonprofit is completely devoted to. Once you join or donate to this organization, it is nearly impossible to walk away. There are too many ways to get involved on your own and stay involved. It is such a creative, expressive way to be involved in such a great cause. It is no longer a one-time give because you feel sorry and you hope you helped, but it is almost a calling.
I haven’t really seen many negative effects of their fundraising campaigns other than they most likely have to keep a close monitoring staff on every one of their approval of events. However, because they offer lots of information and seminars to their supporter and lots of help, it seems very hard for them to fail. They may not raise a great deal of money, but I’m sure they have impacted their audience in more than that kind of way, which is what the organization is about.
Some of the articles I found were about the university groups raising a little over a thousand dollars, etc. But most of the news stories that this organization popped up in were success stories, not money; testimonials of how these people have changed lives. According to a recent article about their new campaign, in Florida Today, “The goal of the campaign, according to TWLOHA founder Jamie Tworkowski, is to tell people ‘that their life matters, and their story is significant.’” They are clearly devoted to their cause in making people have a better outlook on themselves. No wonder they have so many success stories from people.
