The non-profit organization I chose to research is Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a health care provider that provides vital reproductive health care, sex education, as well as various types of birth control and condoms. According to their official website, their mission is to provide reproductive health care services that preserve and protect the privacy of the individual, specifically to those who may have a low income as well as support through educational programs that enhance understanding to the individual, whether it is about their personal body and health or sexual health in general. While there have been various donors who have tried to help Planned Parenthood turn to a for profit organization, they have strived to ensure that their services are obtainable for all those who need it.
Planned Parenthood is well connected through their Facebook and Twitter pages. In fact, they operate three separate Twitter pages, with one specifically towards teens and educating them on sexual health. They have recently begun an official Instagram page that is only about a year old. On their Instagram are images that support safe sex, including a post that says Plan B, and an image that says “Be Ready if You Get Lucky”; these are to influence their followers in messages through images to protect themselves when engaging in sexual activity. With a mere 2,388 Instagram followers, their influence on Instagram is nowhere near as impactful as their 27,000 plus Twitter following. I believe that this shows their influence may not be as strong within Instagram’s current youthful society as it is in the college influenced Twitter following’s background.
Planned Parenthood currently has 6,400 plus subscribers to their official YouTube channel. They have divided their video content by playlists making it easier for their subscribers to find what they need. One smart thing that they have also included on their channel are videos in Spanish that ensure that Latinos that need support from Planned Parenthood. As with their Instagram account, their following on their visual sites are not as strong as those on Twitter and Facebook. I connect this to the direct or target audiences that they are striving to connect with. It seems as if their clientele are older, college aged or low-income families who may not be able to support children at the moment. They are striving to connect with the younger teenage audience. I believe that with my consistent postings on more visual sites such as Instagram and even Vine, it will connect them with whom they desire to reach.
